Shomera Awarded the Green Globe

The Green Globe ceremony, organized by Life & the Environment – the umbrella organization for Israel's environmental non-profits – is one Israel's important environmental events. The Green Globe is awarded to those initiatives, projects, people and associations that have most significantly impacted the quality of life and environment in Israel. These awards are meant to encourage positive activity in the areas of environment, public health and quality of life.

In this, its fifth year, one of the recipients of the award was Shomera for a Better Environment for its exemplary environmental activity. Shomera is proud to receive the Green Globe and intends to continue in the future in the environmental-social field through its education, activism and community work. This recognition of Shomera's activities, encourages us to further enterprise and is positive reinforcement for all who have participated in the organization's activities.

Renewed Activity in Shimrit's Gardens

Last week, on the final Shiva night for Shimrit Ginot, z"l, neighborhood residents, friends, associates and supporters met with her family in order to discuss the continuation of her life's work – the promotion of the community garden in San Simone, which will now be named after her – Shimrit's Gardens. Two areas of activity have been decided upon: in the short term, immediate restoration work on the garden on Wednesday afternoons with the help of the Dvash Group; in the long term, a planning committee will be established to decide on the best strategy for the gardens' development. Shomera for a Better Environment, which has worked with Shimrit over the years, will continue to support the garden for the benefit of the neighborhood residents and the wider community.

The first garden restoration activity  commences this week. Meeting place: The garden of Shimrit’s residence- 15 Chalafta Street, San Simon. For additional information please contact ginot.shimrit@gmail.com

Shomera will provide regular updates as to future opportunities for activity and involvement.

On Trial before a Beit Din

This past Monday, 7.07.08, Shomera for a Better Environment ran a unique Judaism and the Environment event. The program included a mock trial, created as a joint venture with Gazit, the Association for Rabbinical Courts for Financial Disputes.  Dayanim (religious judges), lawyers and environmental experts all participated in a trial that dealt with air pollution caused by a building contractor which affects the neighboring residents.

Among the prosecution's arguments were the effect on the health of the residents and the contractor's deviation from the accepted standards for dust caused by the construction on the site. The defense argued on behalf of his client that there would be severe financial damage to both the contractor and those who purchased the apartments in the buildings under construction, and that the prosecution had unsubstantiated claims of the prosecution. During the trial Dr. Michael Gerber, former director of the Department for Air Quality at the Ministry of Environmental Protection, presented various environmental concepts and the existing technological solutions available to ease the pollution that is created; he also explained the air pollution laws, the differences between the types of dust and that the deviation from the standard was for fine dust, which is the most dangerous to health.

In the end, the court ruled in favor of a two week suspension of construction, which was considered enough time to implement the solutions necessary to significantly reduce the pollution, without causing severe financial harm to the contractor.

Activity in the Forest

This past Independence Day the volunteers from the Forum of Organizations for the Preservation of the Jerusalem, which is supported and coordinated by Shomera, went out on a day of activity day in the Forest. The activities included providing information, signing up supporters and distributing garbage bags to facilitate cleaning up, especially on such a busy day in the Forest.   Many petitions were signed, and there has been a large amount of positive feedback.

Now, during the summer vacation, each and every one of us should pay special attention to the Forest – think about how much it contributes to our lives, help it stay clean and be aware of the dangers that threaten it.

For details please visit the Forum's site at  www.savejeruforest.org

Green Tip

Gathering seeds – now is the time to gather seeds from winter flowers and vegetables that have dried up such as coriander seeds, various cabbages, beet leaves and onion seeds.

Home Tip

Batteries – Use rechargeable batteries instead of adding to toxic waste disposable with ingredients such as lithium. One rechargeable battery can last up to 3-4 times more than a disposable battery and it can be recharged hundreds of times before it stops working.

Shomera needs volunteers to provide administrative assistance, lead hikes in the Jerusalem Forest and in the neighborhoods of Jerusalem, counselors for art and other workshops for children, lecturers on nature and the environment, as well as volunteers to assist in maintaining the Shomera Center in the Jerusalem Forest and to man informational booths. Shomera welcomes new initiatives for volunteering.
