Hovevei Zion Hanikia
Hovevei Zion Hanikia
(HZN) has initiated several different activities, including area
cleanups, trashbag handouts to raise awareness of fines, green parades,
rallies, meetings, writing media articles,
joining and working with
Shomera, Ne’eman Nikayon, joining Sustainable Jerusalem, instigating
informational email campaigns, creating, designing and distributing our
mascot program of E Zevel*, and developing an educational program for
the after-school enrichment program in Kiryat Hayovel. Our goal is
to work with the municipality and the public in a cooperative venture
through the marketing of anti-littering messages, contests and
scholarships to increase awareness, discourage littering and increase
morally responsible behavior toward
the environment.
Impact:
To date, HZN has raised awareness of the issue of litter as can be seen
by the number of referrals from community centers, requests for
interviews from Hebrew University radio, Arutz Sheva, Haaretz, The
Jerusalem Post, and the recent offer of a spot in an award-winning
documentary filmmaker’s newest undertaking to be released on Yom Atzmaut.
HZN’s tireless messaging regarding littering has made headlines,
recently in The Jerusalem Post, on community TV and on IBA news. We are
convinced that the means to stop litter before it starts is to make
littering socially unacceptable.
Vision:
The anti-littering message must be delivered in a powerful and
all-encompassing manner. That is the central reason for the development
of HZN’s Clean Jerusalem Initiative. HZN wants to move forward with
stickers, decals, posters and hard hitting campaigns to encourage the
public into correct behavior. With fine amounts posted on decals on all
trash bins, continuous media attention, directed public action,
education and legislation, HZN’s vision is to make litter a thing of the
past!
