In
1999, KKL gave Shomera permission to establish one of Israel's first
ecological education centers on 20 dunam of KKL forest. The site, which
contains archeological relics and agricultural terraces, was
discovered after a local forest fire. The land, which had suffered the
loss of plant and animal life, was lovingly reforested by Shomera
volunteers relying on permaculture practices which help mimic the
surrounding natural ecology.
The Shomera Forest
Education Center was one of the first ecological educational
centers in Israel and a pioneering educator of permaculture
and organic gardening to the general public. Classes in ecology, mishnayot on agriculture,
ancient crafts, the Jewish annual cycle, arts and environemnt and much more
were offered to thousands of visitors - adults, youth and
children from a variety of backgrounds.
Today, with the site no
longeroperative, the grounds have been returned to the KKL.
