Executive Management:
Miriam Garmaise - Executive Director

   Miriam Garmaise has a varied background and wide range of experience in the areas of urban design, business and the non-profit world allowing her a broad, multi-disciplinary view of the issues and resources around her. Prior to joining Shomera For A Better Environment, Miriam’s experience included urban planning and design initiatives at Carr Lynch Associates, Cambridge, MA; Arrowstreet,Inc., Cambridge, MA and Abeles, Schwartz & Associates, Inc., NY. Miriam also worked in marketing and product management at Knoll International, NY and was marketing director at Danish Interiors, Israel.

In 2001 Miriam joined Shomera, where she held a variety of senior positions, until being appointed Executive Director in September 2008. As Executive Director, she began directing the organization towards forging proactive partnerships with business, academia and government, thereby making Shomera a catalyst for change and the betterment of life in Israel.  

Miriam holds a dual Masters degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in City Planning (MCP) and Architectural Studies (MSARCHS). She was the recipient of a Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation of Canada Scholarship Award. Miriam is the founder and CEO of a company which facilitates business development opportunites.

Biographies:

Board of Directors (Pro Bono):

Shirry Dvir

Shirry comes to Shomera with a firm background in management consulting, strategy, marketing and content management, and vast experience creating and establishing organizational procedures. Taking companies from strategy right through to the implementation of processes at all levels of the organization. Over her 20 year career Shirry consulted to various companies in a wide range of industries. Some of these included: Partner Communications (Orange), Clalit Health Services, Coca-Cola, Amdocs, EL AL, Isrotel and the Israeli Military Industries.
Shirry’s experience includes working with “Seker” as a strategy consultant, founding The Center for Medical Information where she acted as Marketing Manager and establishing and managing the Health Channel. Shirry has also worked as writer and editor for the “Ha’aretz” and “Ha’ir” newspapers, as well as various programs for the Education channel.
Shirry holds a BA in Criminology and Anthropology from Bar Ilan University and has studied Organizational Consulting at The Management College Post Graduate Program.

David Nordell 

David Nordell is the founder and CEO of New Global Markets, a financial technology start-up based in Israel and the U.K.  that is developing intelligence systems to fight financial crime. He is also a leading expert on the financing of international terrorism, and writes analysis on this and other aspects of counter-terrorism and security for leading Internet analysis sites. After making aliyah from Britain in 1980 he worked as a journalist for both Israeli and foreign media, then moving into consulting, working with the Israeli ministry of science, the Israel Export Institute and other public bodies on technology and economic policy projects, and was the first professional adviser to the Israeli government on Internet policy. David has also active for nearly 20 years in the management of voluntary bodies in Israel, especially in the field of education, and is currently a member of the Board of Governors of the Jerusalem Academy for Music and Dance.

 

Michelle Kaplan-Green

Michele is the Director of the Nefesh B’Nefesh Go North Program. Previously, Michele was a partner of Info-Access and @The Source Israel. She ran the Community Aliyah Program for Raanana, a joint program of the Raanana municipality, the Ministry of Absorption and the Jewish Agency. In the US, Michele worked in PR and Marketing at UJA-Federation and later opened her own firm servicing clients such as the Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services (JBFCS) and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).  Michele is a founder of Meitarim Raanana, a Jewish pluralistic middle and high school, is involved in the Raanana Networking Group, co-chaired the English speaking Sharon area program for the Israel Women's network and volunteered at the L.O. Combat Violence Against Women's hotline.


Shai Spetgang
Shai Spetgang is a project developer and project manager in the CleanTech space. Shai has managed the Ontario Environment Industry Association,  has consulted to the Israel Economic Mission in Canada to assist Israeli CleanTech companies in their participation in the Canadian CleanTech market. Shai has served as Executive Director of the Canadian Environmental Markets Association, is a founding board member of Canfei Nesharim, the International Orthodox Jewish environmental educational group and a past Chair of the Jewish Nature Centre of Canada.

 

Ishai Wureit

Adv. Ishai Wureit is the CEO of Gilad Government Relations and Lobbying. In the past he served as the Corporate and Regulatory Affairs Manager of BAT in Israel, as Editor of the daily financial section in Maariv and a reporter and producer at the IDF radio station (Galei Zahal). Ishai is a graduate of the Faculty of Law in the Tel Aviv University and a graduate of the Recanati Executive MBA program in the School of Administration, Tel-Aviv University.

Michael Schwartz

The principal of "Michael Schwartz & Associates", a 25 year old Jerusalem-based firm of architects and planners, with a Tel Aviv branch. The architectural practice has a broad base of clients, both local and foreign, and works on a diversity of projects. They have been the in-house architects of the renowned American Colony Hotel for the last 15 years and have developed a solid reputation in both historical preservation and ultra-modern design.

Professor Alon Tal

Professor Alon Tal is deputy chair of the Green Movement. Tal founded Adam Teva V’din, the Israel Union for Environmental Defense in 1990, today largely considered Israel’s leading environmental advocacy organization. There he spearheaded hundreds of campaigns and legal actions, as well as legislative initiatives. He also helped in the founding of Friends of the Earth Middle East and the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies, leading regional initiatives that bring together Israeli and Arab environmentalists. Between 1998-2003, he served as chairman of Life and Environment, expanding membership in Israel’s green umbrella organization from 24 to 80 environmental groups. Recently, he was elected to the international board of the Jewish National Fund, where he now chairs the committee that oversees forestry, river restoration and development projects, implementing a new agenda of “sustainability” for the venerable organization. Professor Tal is a faculty member at Ben Gurion University and has held appointments at Harvard University, Tel Aviv University, the University of Otago in New Zealand. In 2008, he was awarded a life achievement award  by Israel’s Ministry of Environment as party of the country’s 60th anniversary celebrations.

Yael Kliers
Non-profit grantwriter, editor, translator and writer.  Yael holds a Masters degree in English Literature from Bar-Ilan University, and has worked as a professional grantwriter for Laurie Heller and Associates, and for JDC (Joint Distribution Committee).  Her first book of folktales, The Wise Men of Chelm, was published by Sefer Ve Sefel Publishing in 2002.  Yael was an active member of Bustan Brody, one of Jerusalem's first community gardens, and now enjoys organic gardening in the yard of her new home in Elazar.

Carl Perkal
Carl Perkal  is director of resource development at an equal rights advocacy NGO.He has served as a consultant to many non-profit organizations in Israel for fundraising and media.
